As the weather cools down, we start to think about core layering pieces to keep us warm and stylish. Versatility is often key and we look for a piece that will last for years to come. Winter coats are one of these key pieces. I'm sure many of you have a coat or two hiding in your wardrobe, but how often does it actually come out and get worn? The challenge with a winter coat is to use it as a part of an outfit rather than a piece your throw on when you are freezing cold.

Red is big for the season, and an enduring colour that will go with most pieces and last past AW17. Invest in a style that compliments your wardrobe and your lifestyle. We often forget that the right winter coat can take us from casual day wear, to the office and even out at night. Style it with jeans and a tee for a casual look, over an LBD, with burgundy and orange for a pop of colour or with a fun print to keep it fresh. As far as colours go, red being a primary colour will go with most.

Red is not just red, there are blue based reds and orange based reds, so make sure you select the undertone that best compliments your skin tone and wardrobe colours. Look for a hue that brings light to your face, rather than one that drains you, makes you appear sallow or grey in the face. 

As a winter coat is a heavy piece, it is imperative that the shoulders fit true otherwise you risk adding visual weight to your body. You do need a coat that can fit over bulkier layers, but don't compromise the fit for this. The right cut will tick all the boxes, fits through the shoulders, well shaped, correct length, suits your style and keeps you comfortable and warm!
